Today, in response to community uprising over Minneapolis police officers’ murder of George Floyd by restraint asphyxia, Donald Trump tweeted “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” Mr. Trump is promoting the use of deadly force in response to property crimes, which is blatantly unconstitutional. The United States Constitution prohibits law enforcement officers from using deadly force unless that force is necessary to protect the officer or others from an immediate threat of death or serious bodily injury. It is shameful, but not surprising, that this President of the United States would advocate for such lawlessness and unconstitutional behavior. One response is needed. To quote former President Barack Obama, “Vote.”
