LGBTQ Civil Rights Attorneys
In March, 2001, Haddad & Sherwin achieved California’s first mandatory training and curriculum to combat homophobia and abuse in public schools. In the same case, Haddad & Sherwin also won a $500,000 jury verdict, plus a finding for punitive damages, for an African-American high school teacher who was disciplined by his school district, because he spoke out for the rights and safety of gay and lesbian students and staff at San Leandro High School. The case settled after trial for over $1.1 million.
Haddad & Sherwin also successfully represented a transgender man who was subjected to a strip search by police who questioned his gender, obtaining vindication and a six-figure settlement for him. In the course of this case, the San Francisco Police Department improved its policies and procedures for transporting and jailing transgender people.
