Civil Rights

Protecting everyone’s civil rights is an essential part of the democratic values of America, despite our historical legacy of slavery and continuous racial inequality, human rights, and civil liberties are considered sacred.

Most people realize that interfering with another person’s civil rights is a behavior that could result in a lawsuit.

What are civil rights?

Civil rights every citizen’s right to equal treatment (and not suffer unjust or discriminatory treatment) in all contexts, including education, work, housing, etc.

On a historical level, the “civil rights movement” in the United States refers to the efforts made to achieve true equality for all African-American people in every aspect of society.

Nowadays, the term “civil rights” is also used to describe the advance of equality for all the people, regardless of their race or national origin, sexual orientation, age, disability, nationality, religion, gender, or any other related characteristic.

Where do civil rights come from?

Most of the laws that ensure and regulate civil rights originate at federal level, be it through a federal law or through Federal Court Decisions (such as those dictated by the U.S Supreme Court).

Each state in the U.S also has its own civil rights (usually, similar to those at federal level). Even municipalities, cities and counties can promote municipal ordinances and laws related to civil rights.

“Civil rights” and “civil liberties”

Though you could find these two terms together, they have different definitions. Traditionally, the concept of “civil rights” revolves around the basic right to be free of any discriminatory.
